Hello Girls and Guys, Well lets hope you all had a great summer and got lots of time out doors there playing with your favourite toys, be they mountain bikes, kayaks, surf boards, climbing gear...well the list is endless isn't it!

Unfortunately perhaps, Summer isn't endless, but now we get to look forward to playing in the snow and even though I've been ski touring in the French Alps recently I for one am still amped for more!

I'm told there has been some glorious weather recently I also here that if you happened to be in the central North Island last month you might have seen beautiful Mt Ruapehu gleaming white from a fresh dump snow!

All this brings me to the point of reminding you that the Ruapehu Ripper Ski Mountaineering Challenge will again be held this winter at Turoa. Since you all have either participated or expressed interest over the last two events I would like to up date you on this season's coming developments.

Firstly, there will be a brand new course for the Ripper this season, bringing new terrain and dynamics with the biggest change being a long and linear course to better suit all gear set ups. Over all the course should be roughly similar to last season with approximately 1400m of vertical climb over a distance of 10 – 12km.

Secondly and even more excitingly, is the introduction for this season of a teams category so you can work together and enjoy the race with mutual support from your team mate. Based on what I have seen in France this season racing as part of a team is lot of fun and excitement.Of course, the solo category will remain for those who enjoy the individual challenge!

THE PIERRA MENTA: A SPECTACULAR RACE

The four days of that Classic European ski mountaineering event, the 24th Pierra Menta, gave me a eye opening and inspirational look at the possibilities of the competitive side of the sport.(SPECTATORS SKINNING UP ON SATURDAY)

Over four days from the 12th of March, based in the tiny and rustic villages of Areches-Beaufort, France, I watched likely the best athletes the world has to offer in our dynamic sport.

As a relative new comer to competitive ski mountaineering I was over whelmed by the sheer size and details of this event, however the stamina and speed of the racers was nothing short of brilliant, and from a recreational point of view left me gasping at the possibilities for New Zealand in the future.

Heavy snow fall and high avalanche danger over the proceeding days left the course much altered, but most days still saw upto 2000m of vertical gain.

Across all these days the Italians seemed to dominate both the female and male teams, with the French chasing hard and commanding much of the front of the field right to the end.

Ultimately the Italian teams took firsts in both male and female, with French and Swiss teams making up the following second or third placings.

There where many other nationalitys racing along with the traditional favourites, including national and regional teams from Poland, Spain, Chech Republic, Andorra, the Uk and USA. The last two making it extra fun for me to cheer on.

Being a part of this event as one of a vast number of spectators was fantastic. The atmosphere was tremendous and the racers genuinely seemed to be spurred on by the presence of supporters clinging on to ridge tops on the boot packs and gathering in huge numbers at transitions to cheer on all the teams.

After Grant Guise and Jane Harpers efforts in attending this totally demanding race in previous years, I don't believe I would be alone in thinking it would be wonderful for Kiwis to be seen more often in this outstanding event taking place as it does in a truly beautiful alpine setting.

Race day 2008

After encountering intense snowfall, strong winds and high avalanche conditions during set up, Saturday the 20th of September tuned out perfectly for the second Ruapehu Ripper Ski Mountaineering challenge.

A small field of competitors crossed the start line and took on the longest ever ski mountaineering event to be held in NZ. Everyone who took part enjoyed it and the snow and sun made it a great day out.
The fastest competitors finished in just under two hours with the finial competitor finishing just after 3 hours. All in all a pretty good display by all.

The prize giving was a cause of glee for the competitors with everyone taking away great prizes from Deuter, Leki and Voile, from Marvelox NZ, Buffs from Buff Headwear and Guide Books from the New Zealand Alpine Club.

The race was very rewarding to all in many ways and I would like to thank our sponsors for supporting this event.

We will look at running the event again next season. The future of the Ripper however will rest on YOU taking part. To do justice to our sponsors and make the event not only viable but to increase the fun, we would hope to see a turn out of over 30 participants next season.

DON'T FEAR THE RIPPER!

Register tonight at Margaritas from 7pm and you'll be hassle free on the day!

Everything is set for the Ripper tomorrow, we are putting the last touches on the courses today, they'll differ very slightly from the one posted above due the snow and avalanche hazards we have encountered during set up. The Race will now be approximately 1550 vertical meters climb and the rec about 800m vert.
The weather is forecast to clear for Saturday and it looks like it should be pretty damn good...in fact the weekend looks like a cracker!
We know how important this is for getting out and enjoying Ruapehu...so make the most of this wicked looking weekend and do the Ripper on Saturday and come Sunday a relaxing free ski or go on a back country ski tour with your new found friends on the glory that is Mt Ruapehu!

IMPORTANT STUFF.

You can register and suss out all the details on the Friday evening before the race from 7pm to 8pm at Margaritas, Rimu street, The Junction, Ohakune.

On the day you can register in the Alpine Cafe from 8am to 9am. The briefing is at 9:15 and the race should kick off about 10am (weather and snow conditions dependant)

It's $20 to enter plus $41.50 (50% discount) for an all mountain lift ticket if you don't have a season pass.

Please get in touch if you want to enter but don't have avalanche rescue equipment. A limited number of sets are available to hire on the day for $10.

And one more thing, don't forget the delicious curry and drink specials to follow at the prize giving, at the Hot Lava, next door to Margareta's, in the Junction. Ohakune.

The Deuter Ruapehu Ripper is a classic ski mountaineering challenge.

Racing alongside fellow competitors, participants skin up and ski down through the gnarly terrain and conditions offered up by Ruapehu over a total vertical ascent and descent of 3200m across a 10km course. Expect this to take between two to four hours for most participants.

There will be an easier course for those wishing to take more of a recreational tour but still be involved in the thrill of the event.

Remember for all Skimonz events, fun, safety and participation are the focus.

The race will again be held at Turoa this season on 20 September thanks to the support of Turoa Ski Area; Mt Ruapehu, Deuter, Leki, the New Zealand Alpine club, Buff, Protector safety, the Climber magazine and Wilderness magazine.

Great hot food and discounted bar facilities will be on offer at the prize giving at the Hot Lava, at the Junction, Ohakune, along with the chance to score some awesome spot prizes. All major prizes will spot prizes, with placings for first, second and third, Male and Female.

WHAT KIND OF GEAR IS REQUIRED?

Gear List

Skis or Spilt Board with "touring" bindings and skins, or snow shoes.

Avalanche Beacon, Shovel, Probe.

Helmet(skiing, climbing and cycle helmets are all acceptable).

Lightweight wind/water proof jacket.

Back pack that is able to securely carry skis/snowboard.

Crampons.

Sit harness with double cows tail and carabiners.

Avalanche rescue gear can be hired from your local NZAC branch and many good outdoor shops including the Snow Centre Ohakune and Edge to Edge at Whakapapa.

NO WAY COULD I DO A SKI TOURING RACE!

Boy, the amount of times I have heard that over the last six weeks...and this is often coming from people who take part in Triathlons, MTB races, trampers, kayakers etc.

The most common reason for lack of confidence is people think everyone will be better and faster than them and they'll get left way at the back. Well perhaps, but you might be surprised at how well you actually do!

Most competitors rush away with the main bunch at the start but by the second climb nearly everyone is back to their normal touring speed!
Some smart ones start off slower and make big gains at the end, and we all know this is true of all sorts of events.

The second big reason given for not having a go is people seem to think the skiing will be too difficult. Generally how ever if you can ski tour you tend to be a strong enough skier or snowboarder to be able to pick your way through most terrain. And keep in mind: most of the race is in maintaining a steady pace in the up hill and some quick transitions. Far more important than trying to ski a world cup down hill time. (Personally I use it as a rest time and tend to kick turn and snow plow a lot!)

Lastly, if you do think it's a little over whelming, just try the rec event this time round, you'll meet lots of other folks and gain a bit of experience and have a great day out, and since we have a lot of quality spot prizes you might take away a nice bit of gear at the end of the day.
